Generalized pairwise comparisons of prioritized outcomes in the two-sample problem.

چکیده
This paper extends the idea behind the U-statistic of the Wilcoxon-Mann-Whitney test to perform generalized pairwise comparisons between two groups of observations. The observations are outcomes captured by a single variable, possibly repeatedly measured, or by several variables of any type (e.g. discrete, continuous, time to event). When several outcomes are considered, they must be prioritized. We show that generalized pairwise comparisons extend well-known non-parametric tests, and illustrate their interest using data from two randomized clinical trials. We also show that they lead to a general measure of the difference between the groups called the 'proportion in favor of treatment', denoted Δ, which is related to traditional measures of treatment effect for a single variable.

On the Behrens-fisher Distribution and Its Generalization to the Pairwise Comparisons∗
Weerahandi (1995b) suggested a generalization of the Fisher’s solution of the Behrens-Fisher problem to the problem of multiple comparisons with unequal variances by the method of generalized p-values. In this paper, we present a brief outline of the Fisher’s solution and its generalization as well as the methods to calculate the p-values required for deriving the conservative joint confidence ...
متن کاملWhen can we rank well from comparisons of \(O(n\log(n))\) non-actively chosen pairs?
Ranking from pairwise comparisons is a ubiquitous problem and has been studied in disciplines ranging from statistics to operations research and from theoretical computer science to machine learning. Here we consider a general setting where outcomes of pairwise comparisons between items i and j are drawn probabilistically by flipping a coin with unknown bias Pij , and ask under what conditions ...
متن کاملAn assessment of the benefit-risk balance of FOLFIRINOX in metastatic pancreatic adenocarcinoma
BACKGROUND We sought to assess the benefit-risk balance of FOLFIRINOX versus gemcitabine in patients with metastatic pancreatic adenocarcinoma. METHODS We used generalized pairwise comparisons. This statistical method permits the simultaneous analysis of several prioritized outcome measures. The first priority outcome was survival time (OS). Differences in OS that exceeded two months were con...
متن کاملSimultaneous confidence intervals for pairwise multiple comparisons in a two-way unbalanced design.
Turkey's (1953, The Problem of Multiple Comparisons, unpublished report, Princeton University) procedure is widely used for pairwise multiple comparisons in one-way ANOVA. It provides exact simultaneous pairwise confidence intervals (SPCI) for balanced designs and conservative SPCI for unbalanced designs. In this paper, we will extend Turkey's procedure to two-way unbalanced designs. Both the e...
متن کاملModeling of Partial Digest Problem as a Network flows problem
Restriction Site Mapping is one of the interesting tasks in Computational Biology. A DNA strand can be thought of as a string on the letters A, T, C, and G. When a particular restriction enzyme is added to a DNA solution, the DNA is cut at particular restriction sites. The goal of the restriction site mapping is to determine the location of every site for a given enzyme. In partial digest metho...
